Moray Council Confirms 2026/27 Tax Rise to Support Long-Term Budget
The Moray Council has confirmed new council tax rates for the 2026/2027 financial year, outlining a significant increase aimed at stabilising local finances through 2028.
Under the approved plan, council tax will rise by 10% in 2026/27, with a further 6% increase scheduled for 2027/28. The council said the additional income will support essential services and contribute to long-term financial planning amid ongoing budget pressures.
For a Band D property, the annual increase amounts to £157.38, or roughly £3.03 per week. This figure covers only the council tax component and excludes charges for water and wastewater services, which are collected separately on behalf of Scottish Water.
Currently, around 80% of Moray Council’s budget is provided by the Scottish Government, with the remaining 20% raised locally through council tax. The new increase is expected to generate an estimated £5.8 million in extra revenue.
Council leaders stressed that the decision was made after careful consideration, acknowledging the financial strain already faced by households due to rising energy, food, and fuel prices. The Council also confirmed that 84 employees have recently been made redundant, underscoring the difficult fiscal environment local authorities continue to operate in.
For residents, the impact will be clearly felt. One household reported an increase of approximately £30 per month, or £300 per year, calling it “a noticeable and challenging rise.”
The Council said it remains committed to maintaining key public services while managing the growing cost pressures that continue to affect councils across Scotland.
