Moray Council Launches Burghead Pilot for Overnight Campervan Parking

Moray Council has introduced a pilot scheme allowing limited overnight parking for campervans and motorhomes at the Station Road car park in Burghead. The trial will run from 1 April to 30 November 2026, coinciding with the peak tourist season.

The project follows a 2025 public consultation that received more than 2,200 responses, with strong support for designated overnight parking options. The Council says the scheme aims to offer a safe, well‑managed overnight stop for visitors while supporting the local economy and minimising disruption for residents. Burghead was selected due to strong local backing and the availability of waste‑disposal facilities at the nearby harbour.

Under the pilot, up to two self‑contained vehicles may stay between 6pm and 10am, for a maximum of one night. A fee of £7 per night is required, payable through the Council’s PayByPhone app or by calling 01224 440871. Vehicles must be fully self‑contained, and a number of conditions apply, including no outdoor furniture, no awnings, no generators, and no waste or water facilities on site.

Signage has been installed at the car park to outline the terms of use and direct visitors toward local shops and services.

The Council will monitor the scheme throughout the season, reviewing visitor numbers, income generated, community feedback, and any complaints or compliments received. The results will be presented to committee members to help determine whether the scheme should be continued or expanded in future.

In addition to the Burghead pilot, Moray Council highlighted other parking options for larger vehicles. Lossie Green Car Park in Elgin, which includes 13 lorry‑sized bays, permits parking but prohibits overnight sleeping or cooking. Oversized vehicles are charged £7 per day, with monthly permits available for £80. Keith Lorry Park in Keith also provides unrestricted parking at no charge, though overnight stays are not permitted.
